INTELLIGENT CREATURES PRINTS

This is a selection of some of the prints I designed for my Intelligent creatures project which was my final degree project at Chelsea College of Art. It looks at lettering and symbols to create repeats and explores the way creatures might communicate through the patterns on their skin. I created my own 'Intelligent creatures' and imagined that their skin was covered in my prints.

The prints were designed to be playful using materials that are reminiscent of youth, such as 'Playdoh' and chalk boards. I wanted my creatures to seem as though they had been imagined by the brilliant creative mind that we all possess as children. Free from the constraints we put upon ourselves as adults once we learn facts and grasp reality.

I then translated these materials into techniques and textures i could use on a garment. For example I used Puff Binder on Neoprene to create the look of Playdoh. I also tufted the fabric to not only create the effect of a fur like texture but also to replicate the look of Playdoh when it is squeezed through a spaghetti shaped toy.

The letters and symbols dart around my prints in an energetic way which enforces the playful aesthetic. I was inspired by looking at fish dart around each other in the water in a similar way. For one of my prints i created a seamless repeat using my photographs, editing the print in illustrator and photoshop and cleaning the image using a technique I learnt while interning at Mary Katrantzou.

I predominantly used primary colours in my prints to suggest a child like naivety and to contrast the subject matter of 'intelligent' forms of communication.
